# How much does a driving test cost in 2026?

The test fee is the smallest part of learning to drive, and the only part that is fixed. DVSA charges the same at every centre in Great Britain, so nothing on this page varies by where you book — but almost everything else does.

## The costs nobody quotes you

Everything below is a market rate rather than an official one. There is no published figure for any of it, so treat these as the range a quote should fall inside, not a price list.

## A realistic total

DVSA's long-standing guidance is that the average learner needs around 45 hours of professional tuition plus 22 hours of private practice. At £35–£45 an hour, the lessons alone come to roughly £1575–£2025.

Add the provisional licence, both test fees and car hire on the day, and a first-time pass lands somewhere around **£1800 to £2300**. Lessons are about nine tenths of that, which is worth remembering when choosing between a cheap instructor and a good one.

## What a failed test really costs

Not £62. A retest means the fee again, another round of car hire, and usually two or three lessons in between — call it £192 to £330 each time. Around 49.9% of tests end in a fail, so this is the normal case rather than the disaster case.

-   **Give 10 full working days' notice** to move or cancel, or you pay again. Sundays and bank holidays do not count toward the ten.
