How to get an earlier driving test date

The average learner waits 12.1 weeks between booking and testing. You do not have to.

Waiting times are the single most frustrating part of getting a licence right now. As of June 2026 the median gap between booking a car test and sitting it is 12.1 weeks across Great Britain — and at the worst centres it is far longer than that. Here is what actually shortens it.

Understand how slots are released

DVSA's booking window is 24 weeks. Every day, one more day's worth of appointments appears at the far edge of that window. That means there are two completely different ways a slot reaches you:

The published waiting time on this site measures the first. The reason it overstates most people's real experience is that the second is so common.

Work the cancellations

Once you hold a booking you can move it, but the rules tightened during 2026. You now get 2 changes per booking, you need 10 full working days' notice or you pay the fee again, and an existing test can only move to the 3 centres nearest to where it is booked. That makes the strategy narrower than it used to be:

  1. Book something now. Take whatever date exists, however far out. You cannot search for a better slot until you have one to swap.
  2. Check the official service often. Cancellations land throughout the day and there is no published schedule. Short, frequent checks beat one long session.
  3. Choose the centre when you book, not when you move. The 3-centre limit applies to moving an existing test, so a centre further afield means a new booking.
  4. Spend your 2 changes deliberately. Do not burn one shifting the test by a week.
  5. Only take what you are ready for. A slot next Tuesday is worth nothing if you are not test-ready — you will pay again in 10 working days' time.

Do not use a cancellation-finding app or website. Since 12 May 2026, unofficial services that scan the booking service are prohibited, and DVSA can suspend your online access or cancel your booking for using one. Our guide to cancellations covers what is left that works.

Consider a different centre

There is no catchment area for the practical test: a new booking can be at any centre in Great Britain, and the spread is large. Decide this at the point of booking, because moving an existing test is now limited to the 3 nearest centres. These are currently the quickest:

Test centre Region Average wait
Greenham South East 2.9 weeks
Salisbury South West 3.6 weeks
Barrow In Furness North West 3.7 weeks
Boston East Midlands 3.7 weeks
Bodmin South West 3.9 weeks
Weston-super-Mare South West 4 weeks
Slough (London) South East 4.6 weeks
Ashford (Kent) South East 4.7 weeks

The trade-off is real, though. A centre two hours away means testing on roads you have never driven, and unfamiliarity costs marks. The sweet spot is usually a quieter centre within your instructor's normal patch, so you can still get a couple of lessons on its routes. Compare waiting times at every centre.

Things that will not help

While you wait

A long wait is not dead time. It is the only stretch you will get to build genuinely unhurried experience — night driving, rain, motorways with your instructor, and the specific roads around your test centre. Learners who treat the wait as practice time pass at a noticeably better rate than those who stop lessons and turn up cold.

Also worth checking: your theory test certificate lasts two years. If a long practical wait would push you past that date, you have to sit the theory again — and start the wait over.

Frequently asked

How far ahead can you book a driving test?

DVSA opens bookings 24 weeks ahead. The booking window rolls forward daily, so a new day of slots becomes available every morning at the far end of the window.

Do driving test cancellations really appear?

Yes. Tests are cancelled and moved constantly, and those slots go straight back into the booking system. Short-notice availability is genuinely common — it is the waiting for it that is unreliable.

Can I book a test at a centre far from home?

Yes, when you book a new test — there is no catchment area for the practical test, so any DVSA centre in Great Britain is open to you. Moving a test you already hold is more restricted: since 9 June 2026 it can only go to the 3 centres nearest the one it is booked at, or back to your original centre.

Are cancellation-finding apps allowed?

No. Since 12 May 2026 unofficial services that scan the DVSA booking service — cancellation-finder websites and apps — are prohibited. DVSA can suspend your online booking access or cancel your test for using one. Checking the official service yourself carries no such risk.

How many times can I change my driving test?

2 times per booking, down from six on 31 March 2026. After that you have to cancel and rebook. Each change needs 10 full working days' notice or you pay the fee again.
